North Rhine-Westphalia celebrates 60th anniversary
On 23rd August, 1946, the British merged the Rhineland, the Ruhr Zone and Westphalia to form the new Federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The former coal and steel mining state has changed. "The state has mastered the structural change and is on the way to becoming a self-sustaining economy. Others have yet to do that," says Wolfgang Böhme, head of government in Sachsen-Anhalt, commendingly.
If NRW were an independent state, its economic power would make it number 14 in the world, writes the Aachener Zeitung in its issue of 23rd August. Nine out of the 30 Dax companies and 30 of the top 100 businesses are based in NRW.
